The Great Blue Shuffle

Great Blue Heron on the hunt

Have you heard of the stingray shuffle? You’re supposed to stir the water and sand to scare away stingray that might be lurking under foot. Is that what this Great Blue Heron was doing? He would lift a leg, and then … kerplop! I’m familiar with the heron’s most obvious methods of fishing — standing motionless, or the slow motion walk — but I’ve never seen this manner of catching fish. It’s called “disturb and chase” whereby the heron disturbs the water in an attempt to flush any potential catch. Did it work?
